CompTIA Linux+ XK0-006
CompTIA Linux+ (XK0-006, V8) validates the Linux work sysadmins do daily: boot and storage, users and permissions, firewalls and hardening, containers, scripting, and troubleshooting across cloud and hybrid environments.
A sysadmin or cloud engineering role, or a security role that keeps landing on Linux hosts. CompTIA recommends about a year of hands-on Linux server experience plus A+, Network+, or Server+ level knowledge.
Version status
CompTIA has not published a date. Three years after launch is an estimate.
Where the marks live
Domain weights from the current XK0-006 objectives. Start with the heaviest slice, not the first chapter.
System management leads at 23%
How much study time does XK0-006 need?
Pick the closest starting point. The range below is a planning estimate, not a promise or a pass prediction.
70 to 110 hoursat a steady pace
That is up to 22 weeks at 5 hours a week, or 14 weeks at 8 hours. Some IT background, but the exam material is still new.
Estimate only. Based on the exam level and a study-pace assumption. Your background, exam date and practice scores will move it.
A study plan that works
Order matters- Get comfortable on the command line first: navigation, pipes, permissions, and process control.
- Learn systemd and storage hands-on (units, mounts, LVM). They carry the heaviest domain.
- Practice security tasks as procedures: sudo policy, firewalls, SSH hardening, and SELinux denials.
- Write small Bash and Python scripts, then break them and debug. Automation is 17% and shows up in troubleshooting too.

Practice a performance question
8 performance-based questions are written for CompTIA Linux+ XK0-006. They ask you to do the task in a simulated console, table or form, and they grade in parts, so a half-right answer still earns credit.
A Linux script refuses to run: Permission denied
A workstation has 169.254.x.x and no internet
A switch port shows no link light

Common traps
Ways smart people lose points on this exam.
- Reading about commands instead of running them. Performance-based items reward muscle memory.
- Treating SELinux or firewall denials as random. Learn to read the denial and the zone.
- Skipping containers and Git because they feel like a different job. V8 puts both on the exam.
Practise XK0-006, three ways
Every lab is a job task in the tool that job uses, graded on the end state you leave behind. The PBQ pages explain the performance formats this exam uses and open one real scenario in the browser. The practice test gives you fifteen questions with a reason for every option.
