Study ladder: Security+ breadth first, CySA+ analyst depth second.

TL;DR

Take Security+ first, then CySA+. Security+ (SY0-701) tests broad security fluency in up to 90 questions over 90 minutes. CySA+ (CS0-004) tests analyst work in up to 85 questions over 165 minutes. CySA+ assumes the vocabulary Security+ teaches, so reversing the order means learning the language and the job at the same time.

Who each exam is for

Security+ is the entry floor for security roles. It suits help desk techs moving sideways, career changers with basic IT knowledge, and anyone whose job posting lists Security+ as a filter. The exam checks that you speak the language: threats, architecture, operations, and program basics across five domains.

CySA+ is the next rung for people who already speak that language and want to prove they can do analyst work. It suits SOC analysts, incident responders in training, and Security+ holders with a year or so of exposure to logs and tickets. The exam checks that you can read evidence, rank what matters, and write up what you found.

Neither exam expects you to be senior. Security+ expects breadth. CySA+ expects judgment applied to data.

Side by side

  • Security+ SY0-701. Up to 90 questions, 90 minutes, passing score 750 on a 100 to 900 scale. Five domains: concepts 12%, threats 22%, architecture 18%, operations 28%, program oversight 20%. Performance questions appear alongside multiple choice.
  • CySA+ CS0-004. Up to 85 questions, 165 minutes, passing score 750 on a 100 to 900 scale. Four domains: security operations 34%, vulnerability management 26%, incident response and management 24%, reporting and communication 16%. Launched 2026-06-23; the older CS0-003 English version retires 2026-12-22, so new studiers should target CS0-004.
  • Time per question. Security+ gives you about a minute per item. CySA+ gives you nearly two. That gap tells you what CySA+ items look like: longer stems, log excerpts, multi-step reasoning. The extra time is not a gift. It is the cost of reading evidence.
  • Weight center. Security+ spreads weight across five domains with operations on top. CySA+ puts a full third of the exam on security operations and another sixth on reporting. One exam rewards knowing a little about a lot. The other rewards doing analyst tasks end to end.
  • Assumed knowledge. Security+ assumes basic IT fluency (addresses, ports, what a firewall does). CySA+ assumes Security+ fluency (controls, crypto, attack types) plus comfort reading logs. The CySA+ study plan opens with a readiness check for exactly this reason.

Where they actually differ

Breadth against depth

Security+ asks what a thing is and which control fits. CySA+ hands you three log sources and asks what happened. A Security+ question might ask which scan finds missing patches. A CySA+ question shows a scan report and asks which finding to fix first given exploitability and business context. Same topic, different altitude. If you enjoy the second shape, you are ready for the Analyst exam. If it exhausts you, build fluency first.

Reading load

CySA+ is a reading exam wearing a security costume. Long stems hide the real question behind context, and rushing readers answer the wrong question confidently. Security+ stems are shorter and more direct. Practice accordingly: Security+ prep means many fast reps, and CySA+ prep means fewer, longer investigations with a timer running. Our weak-spot method tracks speed separately for this reason, since slow correct answers on timed skills count as shaky.

Reporting is scored

CySA+ gives 16% to reporting and communication, which surprises candidates who studied only technical material. Findings need evidence, conclusion, and recommendation in that order. Security+ has no equivalent domain. If writing was never your study focus, start practicing one-paragraph findings early. It is the cheapest 16% on either exam once you learn the shape.

Career signal

Security+ opens doors because postings name it. CySA+ moves you inside the building toward analyst titles because hiring managers know what its questions demand. Neither cert replaces experience, and neither excuses a thin resume. But as a pair they tell a clean story: this person learned the field, then learned the job.

Which one first

Almost everyone: Security+ first. The reasons stack up. CySA+ questions assume Security+ vocabulary, so skipping ahead doubles your study load. Security+ is also the cert more postings filter on, which matters while you are still earning the second one. And the 90-minute Security+ format is gentler exam-day training than a 165-minute log marathon.

The exception is the working analyst. If you already triage alerts daily and read SIEM output for a living, CySA+ first is defensible, and some employers pay for it directly. Even then, skim Security+ material for gaps, since analyst habits sometimes skip governance topics the Analyst exam still tests through vulnerability management framing.

After Security+, give yourself a short gap, not a long one. Two to four weeks of log-reading practice preserves momentum without burnout. Then run the CySA+ plan as written.

The cost of the wrong order is concrete: candidates who start with CySA+ typically stall in week three, when log-heavy questions demand vocabulary they never built, and retreat to Security+ material anyway. That retreat costs a month and some confidence. Starting with Security+ costs nothing extra, since every hour transfers upward. When the foundation-first path and the ambitious path cost the same, take the one with fewer failure modes.

A tale of two questions

Same topic, different exams. Security+ style: "A scanner reports a missing patch on a public-facing server. Which scan type found it." You answer credentialed against non-credentialed scan from vocabulary and move on in under a minute. CySA+ style: you get the scanner output (forty findings across twelve hosts), a note that the public-facing server holds customer data, and threat intel that the missing patch has active exploits. The question asks which three findings to remediate first and in what order. Answering takes reading, ranking, and a written reason per pick. Notice what changed: the facts grew, the clock shrank per decision, and context does half the work. Train for the second shape with full reports, not flashcards.

Mistakes switchers make

Security+ passers fail CySA+ in predictable ways. First, they under-read stems, answering in thirty seconds out of Security+ habit and missing the sentence that changes the answer. Second, they skip reporting practice because it feels soft, then drop the 16% that would have carried them. Third, they study new tools instead of new judgment, collecting SIEM syntax while triage logic stays weak. Fourth, they simulate short: plenty of 30-question sets, zero full 165-minute sittings, so exam-day fatigue arrives as a surprise. Each mistake has a boring fix (slow down, write findings, triage daily, sit full exams), and the exam-day checklist covers the logistics side.

How to study for the one you pick

For Security+, follow the 8-week plan and drill ports plus acronyms until recognition is instant. For CySA+, read logs daily, practice the five-minute triage sequence (confirm, correlate, contain), and write one finding paragraph per week. Both exams open with performance questions, so rehearse under the PBQ strategy: attempt everything, perfect nothing at the expense of the clock. Book only when fresh simulations, not repeats, clear your bar, and check the readiness explainer so you know what ready looks like.

Questions about this guide

You can, but most candidates should not. CySA+ questions assume Security+ vocabulary (controls, crypto, attack types), so skipping means learning the language and the analyst job at once. Working SOC analysts are the main exception.
